The handheld is the face of warehouse software on the floor. With the wrong device, even the best software feels slow and error-prone. Consider these points when choosing:
1. Barcode scanner
- 1D and 2D support: To read QR and DataMatrix codes as well as product barcodes, you need a 2D scanner.
- Scan range: For high racks, choose models that can read at long range.
- Damaged label performance: Reading worn labels saves real time on the floor.
2. Ruggedness
Check the device's drop, dust and water resistance ratings. For special environments such as cold storage, check the manufacturer's operating temperature range.
3. Battery and shifts
The device should last a full shift without charging. In multi-shift operations, a swappable battery is a big advantage.
4. Operating system and software compatibility
Make sure your warehouse application supports the device's operating system version. Nitrogen PDA runs on Android and iOS devices, and on Windows with its desktop client.
5. Screen and ergonomics
- Touchscreen usable with gloves
- Readable in sunlight
- Comfortable one-handed use with a physical scan key
6. Connectivity
Check Wi-Fi coverage across the warehouse. If the signal is weak between racks, in the cold room or at the dock, strengthen the access points before buying handhelds.
If you are unsure which device fits your operation, our team can set up a trial with your existing devices or recommended models.
